Still think battery rebates don’t apply to you?
You’re not alone. Nearly every week, I speak to someone who’s surprised to hear they’re eligible for a rebate on home battery storage, especially high-income earners or those who already have solar & battery installed.
So let’s clear things up. The current federal Cheaper Home Battery Program is offering unprecedented support to help homeowners invest in energy storage. And it’s not just a token discount; some of our clients, like Leon in Gisborne South or Michael in Woodend, are receiving over $15,000 towards their dream systems.
Here’s how it works, who qualifies, and how to make the most of it.
What is the Cheaper Home Battery Program?
The Cheaper Home Batteries Program provides an upfront discount, delivered through accredited installers. It enables home batteries to qualify for STCs (Small-scale Technology Certificates). These certificates reduce the upfront cost of a system and have traditionally applied only to solar and heat pump hot water systems, but now, if your battery meets eligibility requirements, you can claim them on battery storage too.
It’s a game-changer.
What’s the rebate worth?
The rebate you receive is based on:
- The amount of storage you install (measured in kWh)
- The current STC value, which can fluctuate
- The location and date of your installation
The rebate depends on system size and STC value, which fluctuates. There’s no fixed $/kWh rate published by the government. For the sake of clarity, let’s look at the example to see the sort of savings you might be looking at.
Example:
Install a 50kWh battery and you could be eligible for a rebate of: 50 × $333 = $16,650
Now that’s not for everyone, but for some families, this has made a high-end energy storage system finally within reach.
What’s the catch?
The biggest catch? You can only claim the battery rebate once per property.
That means if you go too small now and want to add more storage later, you won’t be able to claim again. So it’s important to think long-term and get the design right from the start.
- Your system must be installed by an accredited provider and meet the eligibility criteria set by the scheme
Most households with eligible systems can qualify, but you must meet certain requirements (like having solar and using an accredited installer). The real trap is getting a solution that isn’t designed to make the most of it.
If the system isn’t sized properly or the components aren’t set up to work together, you could end up with something that falls short of what you need, isn’t future-proofed, or leaves you wishing you’d done it differently down the track.
Common questions and misunderstandings
“Is this means-tested like other rebates?”
No. Income is not a factor. High-income households are absolutely eligible.
“Do I need to have solar already?”
No, but if you don’t, you’ll need to install a system that includes both solar and storage to meet the requirements. We can help with that.
“Can I just add a battery to my old solar system?”
Sometimes, but not always. It depends on the inverter, the age of the system, and the configuration. We offer a free onsite visit with a local technician to assess and advise on the best options for you.
Real client outcomes
We’ve had clients from Gisborne, Woodend, and Sunbury install batteries ranging from 13kWh to 50kWh and receive between $3,000 and $16,000 in upfront support. And it’s not just about savings, it’s about:
- Having backup power in a blackout
- Running your home on solar long after the sun goes down
- Charging your EV overnight without buying grid power
- Increasing comfort and control at home year-round
Fun fact
Even a 50kWh battery, which can unlock over $15,000 in rebates, is still only half the size of the battery setup installed at The Block houses in Gisborne South during filming. Those homes were designed for serious energy independence, and the scale of those systems shows just how far home energy has come.
The best part
The battery rebate doesn’t cancel out your eligibility for other rebates. Most households with eligible systems can qualify, but you must meet certain requirements (like having solar and using an accredited installer).
If you’re thinking about a battery
Even if you’re not quite ready to commit, now’s the time to start planning.
Rebates decrease every year. If you install in January vs. November, you could be looking at a very different outcome.
And if you’re building a system for the long haul, it makes sense to:
- Design your solar to fill a battery
- Use a compatible inverter (like Fronius Gen24)
- Set yourself up to add a battery easily when the time is right
