Want to get more from your solar battery? Learn how to use time-of-use pricing to increase savings, improve payback, and gain control over your energy costs.

A well-designed solar and battery setup is one of the smartest investments you can make for your home. But just having a battery isn’t the full story – how you use it is where the real savings kick in.

With rising energy prices, changing peak periods, and more advanced energy plans becoming available, the smartest households are learning how to shift and store energy strategically, not just generate it.

Whether you’re planning to add a battery or already have one, this article walks you through how to use your solar storage more effectively, increase your return on investment, and get closer to grid independence, without changing how you live.

If you’re based in Gisborne, Sunbury, Woodend, Kyneton, or anywhere across the Macedon Ranges, this is exactly the kind of local insight that can help you take control of your energy setup.

A quick backstory from my own home

When we built our new home in Gisborne, we went big from the start:

35kW of solar and 44kWh of BYD battery storage. For the first couple of years, we didn’t need to think too hard about our usage or settings – the system just worked. We were producing more than we needed, and our electricity bill sat happily at $0 without much effort.

But over time, things changed. Feed-in tariffs dropped, peak electricity rates rose – especially between 3pm and 9pm – and we were using more power as our family and lifestyle evolved. Charging the EV more often, running the house more consistently… it all added up.

Before we knew it, we were seeing electricity bills again. Not huge ones – but enough to make us stop and ask:

“Are we using our system in the smartest way?”

That question led us to shift how we thought about energy altogether. We realised that having a great system wasn’t enough anymore – we had to start working smarter, not harder, if we wanted to stay in control of our energy and our costs.

So we made one small but mighty change:

We set our battery to charge from the grid between 11am and 2pm, during what’s often called the solar soak window – when energy is abundant, clean, and cheap (and in our case even free).

Because we were already on an EV plan, this option was already available to us; we’d just never thought to use it, as it felt counterintuitive. We’re making lots of solar at that time of day, so we dont need the “free power”. How wrong we were…

That one tweak? It brought our electricity bill back to $0.

But more than that, it reminded us that energy independence isn’t just about what you install… It’s about how you use it.

And that’s something every homeowner with a battery – or thinking about getting one – should know:

The real magic is in the settings.

So… what does “using it smarter” actually mean?

Let’s talk about time-of-use tariffs – because this is where the shift really happens.

These days, most electricity retailers offer pricing that changes depending on when you use power. It’s called a time-of-use plan, and chances are you’re already on one or have the option to switch.

In simple terms:

  • Peak (usually 3pm–9pm): Power is at its most expensive because everyone’s home, turning everything on.
  • Off-peak (the rest of the time): Power is cheaper, especially in the middle of the day when solar is flooding the grid and demand is low.

Now here’s the interesting bit:

Even though we were generating lots of solar between 11am and 2pm, we had never thought to charge our battery from the grid during that window. We assumed it didn’t make sense – we already had “free” solar, right?

But when we looked closer, we realised that using grid power at that time, on our EV plan where it costs us nothing during those hours, meant we could top up the battery without dipping into our solar generation. That way, the battery would always be fully charged and ready to power the house through peak pricing, even on days with low solar.

It’s counterintuitive, but incredibly effective.

And that’s the big mindset shift:

Smart battery use isn’t just about using solar – it’s about using whatever’s cheapest and most available, and keeping your battery working for you when it matters most.

Good news – you can access a plan like this even if you don’t have an EV.

Why batteries are no longer just a luxury

We often hear people say things like: “Solar doesn’t make sense for me because I’m not home during the day,” or “batteries are too expensive and take too long to pay off.”

But that story is starting to change.

With feed-in tariffs falling and electricity prices rising, relying purely on solar panels to lower your bill isn’t as effective as it once was. The battery is now the missing piece in the energy puzzle. It’s what allows you to store your excess solar when you’re not home, and use it when you are – especially during peak pricing in the evening.

And now, by learning how to use a battery strategically with time-of-use tariffs, households can take control of their savings. Batteries are no longer just for early adopters or those with the biggest systems. They’re fast becoming a smart, accessible tool that gives you more comfort, more control, and a clearer path to energy independence.

How time-of-use tariffs and battery strategy work together

Here’s where the savings really happen: when your battery is programmed to charge and discharge in sync with your tariff.

With most time-of-use plans, grid electricity is cheapest in the middle of the day and most expensive between 3pm and 9pm. So, by charging your battery during the low-cost window (whether from solar or the grid), and using it to power your home during peak hours, you shift your usage away from the highest-cost periods.

It doesn’t require more panels. It doesn’t require a bigger battery. It just requires a smarter strategy.

This is especially valuable in winter when your solar generation might drop. By using the grid to top up your battery during the free time (typically 11am–2pm), you’re ensuring you still have energy reserves when it counts, without paying peak rates.

It’s not just about reducing your bill. It’s about increasing your return on investment, improving your battery payback period, and making the most of the energy you control.

Final thoughts: Batteries that work smarter for you

Battery storage is no longer just a “nice to have.” It’s a strategic part of your home energy setup that gives you more comfort, more control, and more independence as we move away from gas and rely more on electricity for our heating, transport, and hot water.
