In October, Josh and I were invited to visit Sigenergy in Shanghai, China. We were excited to get to know a brand we’d been curious about, and even more excited to see if their range of products met high standards.
This trip wasn’t about sightseeing or ticking off a factory tour. It was about due diligence and making sure that any product we recommend to Macedon Ranges and Sunbury families is one we’d confidently put in our own homes. Bringing a new product into our ecosystem is something we take incredibly seriously. We soon learned that Sigenergy not only met our standards, but saw them extend further than we expected.
Why We Went to China
At Bluegum, we only recommend products that we would install in our own homes. That standard is a non-negotiable. Products like Fronius, BYD and Tesla have been easy for us to recommend because we live with them every day.
Sigenergy was different. It was new. No one on our team had used it in their family homes yet, and that made us nervous. When you’re responsible for people’s energy freedom, “nervous” is not where you want to stay.
But the industry is shifting.
We needed a reliable battery solution for customers with non-hybrid inverters. The Tesla Powerwall 2 had been discontinued and we had yet to find a suitable solution. We also weren’t prepared to consider unnecessary inverter replacements for our customers.
Sigenergy’s modular design, premium finish and large storage capacity in a single stack ticked all our boxes. It combined some of our favourite features from the Tesla and BYD with its modular nature and seamless backup.
Still, before we could lean in fully, we needed to understand the people behind the product.
That’s what took us to China.
Looking at Sigenergy Up Close
The first shock was just how many people were involved in the development of each battery module and energy controller. Up to eighty people touch a single product from start to finish. As someone who spends a huge amount of time thinking about product quality, that level of human involvement was both unexpected and reassuring.
Then came the testing.
I wish we could have filmed it, but Sigenergy understandably protects its IP. Every product goes through full-cycle testing, including a room heated to 45–50 degrees where units must run flawlessly under extreme conditions. Not one product, every product.
It was more thorough than anything we’ve seen in other manufacturing facilities.
What struck me most was how serviceable and sustainable the products are. If an issue ever arises, modules can be disassembled, repaired and reused rather than thrown away. In an industry where too many products become e-waste, this matters.
Seeing all of this firsthand made me think, if only our customers could see what we’re seeing. They’d understand exactly why a quality battery costs what it costs.
High Quality Manufacturing
Many Australians are sceptical about Chinese manufacturing, and I understand why. There’s a wide range in quality, and not every factory is operating at a standard we’d accept.
But the Sigenergy facility is world-class.
It’s the difference between a cheap imported knock-off and a premium product built with care.
Just like in any country, you get what you pay for.
So when people say, “I don’t want anything made in China,” I get it. But I also know that if you take that stance, you will severely limit your options, because even global products often use Chinese components.
The answer isn’t to avoid China. The answer is to choose high-quality manufacturing and focus on the right solution for your home or problem.
And Sigenergy may be just that.
Learning From Sigenergy's Leadership
One of the biggest things I took from Sigenergy was the standard of patience and intention behind how they hire. The company has enormous growth pressure. There are queues of people wanting to work for them. Yet they don’t rush.
Every hiring decision is slow and deliberate.
Every team member is carefully selected.
Every role is built to support customers long after the sale.
It reminded me that fast growth doesn’t have to mean rushed decisions. And as Bluegum grows, that’s a mindset we want to emulate. The right people, not just more people.
Another leadership moment came when I realised how fast China moves. Innovation there is rapid. They don’t wait for perfect conditions before they test or try something. That willingness to iterate without fear of failure is something Australia could learn from.
Building Trust and Connections
One of the biggest highlights wasn’t in the factory at all, but at dinner. At the same table were two leaders I deeply respect:
Sherard, founder of TradeZone and one of the most innovative wholesalers in Australia, and Tony, Sigenergy’s CEO and a globally respected entrepreneur.
Listening to Tony speak about Sig’s journey, his commitment to being a premium product and even his pride in raising twins, gave me an immediate sense of who he is as a person and leader.
He’s grounded, thoughtful and deeply invested in Australia as Sigenergy’s strongest global market. That means Australian requirements are prioritised first, not squeezed in later. It also means our feedback directly shapes their roadmap.
Being able to sit next to leaders like Tony and Sherard made me feel inspired, humbled and more confident than ever in the direction we’re steering towards at Bluegum.
Sigenergy in Australia
Sigenergy is investing heavily in Australia, including a new Sydney headquarters with a carefully selected support team. This matters because excellent local support is essential when things go wrong, not just when everything is easy.
What’s coming next is exciting:
- A new Sigenergy inverter for households who want to start with solar now and add a battery later.
- DC charger improvements, including warranty approvals from several EV manufacturers.
- Even smarter EV-to-home functionality, for those who want their vehicle to play a role in their energy ecosystem.
Whether you agree with using the car as a home battery or, like me, see more value in powering the car from the house, Sigenergy will support both approaches.
They’re positioned to be a market leader in this space over the next 12–24 months, making them a premium choice for battery storage in Gisborne and Sunbury.
How This Trip Inspired Us
As a business owner, this trip left me feeling inspired.
Inspired by the technology.
Inspired by the leadership.
Inspired by the future of all-electric living.
And inspired to keep Bluegum at the forefront of an industry that is about to transform faster than most people realise.
Australia is moving into an all-electric future quicker than any of us may have predicted ten years ago. Batteries are becoming mainstream, not niche. Battery storage in the Macedon Ranges and Sunbury area is no exception to the growth in all-electric ecosystems being adopted. Homeowners are craving comfort, independence and lower running costs. And once they experience an all-electric lifestyle, and see the savings, that excitement spreads.
I’m proud of the products we offer and even more proud of our commitment to only recommend what we’d install in our own homes. Sigenergy has earned its place in that small group of trusted ecosystems we believe in.
This trip showed me that we are ready for what comes next, and so is Australia.
