Visiting Fronius HQ in Austria

For over a decade, we have installed Fronius inverters in our clients’ homes and our own.

There are over 600 homes across Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges with a Fronius inverter installed on the wall by our team.

This has weighed on us over the last couple of years. Doubts have crept in about the brand we’ve trusted the longest. Can they keep up with the pace of the industry they once pioneered?

We weren’t convinced, so we took a trip to Fronius’ HQ in Austria.

Where Our Doubts Came From

The solar and battery industry is changing fast. Grid charging has taken off. The Cheaper Home Batteries Program has exploded. Average home batteries have grown beyond what the industry expected in less than three years.

Some manufacturers, particularly new Chinese brands, are working at extraordinary speeds. It’s almost impossible to keep up.

Fronius has never been one to move quickly.

Like Toyota, they’re steady; rarely the first out the gate with the latest technology.

In the past, we considered this a strength. As time has gone on, we found ourselves questioning their position in this accelerating industry.

Are they keeping pace? Can they innovate fast enough for where Australia is heading?

But the biggest question of all: Is the Fronius inverter a product that we recommend that will still stack up in ten years’ time?

So when we visited Fronius in June, we asked.

What We Saw On Fronius' Factory Floor

Our tour of Fronius’ production site covered two kilometres, on foot. Yep, there’s really that much to see.

The first thing that struck us was how intentional Fronius are about what they automate versus what their team does by hand. Forklifts drive themselves. Packing (both in and out of storage) is automated. Repetitive box-moving is left to machines.

The assembly tasks that determine the quality of a finished product, on the other hand, are done, well, by hand.

There is a desk where one person sits, with 50 metal stencils hanging above it. That person’s job? Hand-stencilling that famous Fronius logo onto the inverter covers. Each of  Fronius’ premium welder machines is built from start to finish by a single person. Fronius is most famous globally for its work in the conversion of power, which is why solar power and charging was a natural progression for them all those years ago.

In Fronius’ HQ sits a Lamborghini frame. Every Lamborghini is hand-welded, in small numbers and to exact specifications, using a Fronius welder. Almost everything is made in one place. The metal is welded, bent and powder-coated on-site. Fronius’ dedicated team are the very definition of exceptional manufacturing.

The Lamborghini frame stands as a remi

The People That Make Up Fronius

Another thing that stood out to us was the number of women on the factory floor. There were whole production lines of women in shorts and their Fronius T-shirts, laughing and working together.

Our guide told us that Fronius’ workforce is 49 per cent women. A number almost unheard of in welding, solar and manufacturing.

Everywhere we looked, Fronius’ exceptional culture kept showing up:

  • Free on-site kindergarten so parents can bring their children to work
  • Subsidised canteens throughout (the factory outgrew a standard break room)
  • 300 EV chargers in the staff car park, running on software Fronius not only wrote themselves but also shared publicly
  • Every person we walked past said hello

Fronius is 80 years old, still family-owned, and led by Elisabeth Engelbrechtsmüller-Strauß, granddaughter of Fronius’ founder Günter Fronius.

Companies that cut corners (and over the years, we’ve seen a few) do not look like this. Culture is not something you can fake for a group tour that comes through twice daily, year-round.

Seeing Fronius in this context changed something in us.

What Fronius' Intentional Approach Actually Means

We had fallen into the trap of thinking that going slower had become a weakness in this fast-paced industry.

Standing on Fronius’ factory floor, going slow suddenly looked different; it meant having an inverter that sits on your wall, intentionally designed to work for 20 years.

Those brands that move the fastest also send their problems out into the world the fastest, too. We see it in the field. Fronius takes longer because each product is built and tested to be supported for decades, by a company structured to still exist in decades too.

Their quiet and intentional approach is making leaps in new development too. During our visit, we got to see new products coming to Australia later this year that really excited us (don’t worry, we filmed walkthroughs that we’ll share soon).

Suddenly, our questions about Fronius’ ability to keep up with the industry no longer mattered. It was never about the quality of their work, either. What we really wanted to know was if the company behind the inverter would still be here in 15 years.

The answer was staring us in the face. 80 years and three generations of the Fronius family stood before us, with their exceptional attention to detail and impressive company culture. We are now confident that Fronius is still an industry leader.

What This Means For Your Home

We are not saying Fronius is the right answer for every home.

Our team designs each system around your home and the family in it. Different situations call for different products. What works for you might not work for your neighbour.

But what we are saying is this: When we recommend Fronius, that recommendation now carries a factory floor we have walked, people we have met, and a doubt we took all the way to Austria and tested in person.

But what we are saying is this–when it comes to Fronius, our recommendation has been tested.

We’ve had our doubts, and raised them with Fronius directly. We’ve seen how they operate, visited their factory, and met their skilled team. They not only met our high standards, but exceeded them.

Those high standards apply to every brand we recommend.

If you’ve been weighing up solar panels, battery storage, or a whole all-electric plan for your home, we’d love to share the brands we’ve thoroughly researched with you.
