What Does The New “Cheaper Home Battery Program” Mean For You?

First things first – this announcement is bigger than just an election promise!

Everything I’m sharing here comes straight from a meeting I attended with industry experts, including John Crimes from the Smart Energy Council and Chris Bowen MP himself – so you’re getting the scoop straight from the horse’s mouth.

Cheaper Home Battery Program, Chantel Gilbert, Bluegum CEO

Now, I don’t have a crystal ball, but I’m optimistic this initiative will move forward no matter how the election pans out.

Despite headlines suggesting otherwise, this isn’t a flashy election handout. It’s a practical upgrade to Australia’s successful solar incentive program that’s already made us global leaders in solar adoption. With home battery storage becoming increasingly important, this move couldn’t be timely.

Last month, Bluegum hit a major milestone – we installed more battery storage (kWh) than solar panels (kW) for the first time ever! This reflects a broader trend: one in three Australian homes now has solar panels, and half our clients choose batteries right from the start.

What’s Changing in the STC Scheme for Home Battery Storage?

The government proposes that home battery storage systems become eligible for Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) – the proven incentive scheme already helping Australians significantly cut solar installation costs.

Quick Breakdown:

  • Batteries would qualify for the STC scheme just like solar, based on storage capacity (kWh).
  • No new bureaucracy or red tape – just a smooth integration.
  • Proposed start date: July 1 (pending election outcomes, though I’m hopeful it will proceed regardless).

Why This Battery Rebate Is Likely to Happen No Matter the Election Outcome

The groundwork is already laid. No new departments, complex forms, or extra admin needed – we’re using the successful, existing STC system. This makes me confident the change will happen, no matter who’s in charge after May 3rd. The STC scheme has survived multiple elections, and the battery inclusion has been anticipated by industry insiders for some time.

Is the $2.3 Billion Investment in Battery Rebates Worth It?

Yes, it’s a substantial investment – but when you consider our urgent need for improved grid infrastructure and the rapid adoption of electric vehicles and electrification of homes, it makes complete sense. This investment isn’t just about renewable energy; it’s about stabilising our electricity grid for a sustainable, all-electric future.

Home Battery Rebate FAQs

Who’s Eligible?

  • Anyone! Homeowners, businesses, community groups – everyone qualifies.
  • No approvals or means-testing required.

When Does it Start?

  • The proposed start date is July 1.
  • Installations happening now can qualify if they’re turned on and certified after July 1 (yes, that includes the certification selfie!).

Is This Another Rebate?

  • No, STCs aren’t a fixed rebate – they fluctuate slightly but have been consistently stable.
  • For example, an average-sized battery (13 kWh) could mean over $4,000 off your installation costs.

Can I Combine This with the Solar Vic Battery Loan?

  • Absolutely, these incentives can be stacked!
  • That means your upfront costs could drop dramatically – from around $15,000 down to as low as $3,000, if you take up the Solar Vic $8,800 interest-free loan. Historically, lower costs were associated with lower-quality products – but not anymore! Plus, you’ll have battery-generated savings to help pay off that interest-free loan.

Are There Limits or Caps?

  • Yes, but very generous – up to 50 kWh of storage per property.
  • Each property can claim once, but multiple properties can each claim separately (like your home and business).

Already Have a Battery? Here’s What the Rebate Means for You

  • Good news: Expanding your existing battery also qualifies.
  • Just remember it’s a one-time claim per property, so plan carefully!

Where to From Here for Battery Storage?

Politics isn’t really my thing – I’ll leave that to others – but here’s how I see it:

We have three paths forward:

  1. Both major parties commit to including batteries in the STC scheme, giving us certainty immediately.
  2. We wait till May 3, only a few weeks away, until the election results confirm the July 1 start date.
  3. If you’re already awaiting your battery installation, you can still continue as planned. We’ll simply delay your inspection until after the first of July so you can access the additional incentives if all goes ahead.

Either way, I’m confident this battery incentive is coming – hopefully sooner rather than later! I’ll keep you updated with all the latest developments.

Cheers,

Chantel
